On Sunday afternoon, as usual, I lay down to take a nap. Just as sleep began to gently hug me, someone called. When I saw Cherian’s name glowing on the mobile screen, I knew it had to be something important.

“What is it, Cherian? It’s been quite a while since I heard your voice.”

“Well, you don’t call either, do you? Leave that aside… I don’t see you at church these days. What happened, my friend?”

Things hadn’t reached a point where I had to unload my problems onto Cherian. Still, as a good friend I couldn’t really avoid, I felt like sharing a few thoughts with him.

“You watch YouTube regularly, don’t you? What kind of programs do you usually like there?”
It was clear my question caught him completely off guard.
He didn’t reply.

“Let me ask you something else then. YouTube has a lot of stuff going on these days; there are videos of people bathing chickens, playing with wild animals, making people do things that probably shouldn’t be done. What do you think is the intention behind all that?”

“Money. What else? And that’s not all. Look at how many channels are now spreading malicious and religious content to believers. I’ve often felt like starting something like that myself.”

“But Cherian, you’re not a priest, are you?”

“Do only priests have the right to interpret religion?”

“Cherian, what I’m trying to say isn’t exactly religious. Why can’t we start a YouTube conversation like the one we’re having right now? I mean, we could present contemporary issues with a bit of humor, spice, and light-hearted banter. After all, millions of people watch dogs being bathed, shampooed and dressed, don’t they?”

“My dear man, find some other work to do. Anyway, what would you call this show?”

“A little bit of this and a lot MORE of that!”

ഞായറാഴ്ച ഉച്ചകഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ പതിവുപോലെ മയങ്ങാൻ കിടന്നു. ഉറക്കം കണ്ണുകളെ തലോടിത്തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ ആരുടെയോ ഫോൺ വിളി. മൊബൈലിൽ ചെറിയാന്റെ പേര് തെളിഞ്ഞു നിൽക്കുന്നത് കണ്ടപ്പോൾ ഇതേതോ കാര്യമുള്ള കാര്യം ആണെന്ന് മനസ്സിലായി.

“എന്താ ചെറിയാൻ? കുറെ നാളായല്ലോ ഇയാളുടെ സ്വരം കേട്ടിട്ട്?”

“ഇയാളും ഇങ്ങോട്ടൊന്നും വിളിക്കാറില്ലല്ലോ! അത് പോട്ടെ… ഇയാളെ പള്ളീലും കാണാറില്ലല്ലോ? എന്ത് പറ്റി, സുഹൃത്തേ?” 

എന്റെ പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ ചെറിയാനെ അറിയിക്കേണ്ട ഗതികേട് ഇതുവരെ വന്നിട്ടില്ല. എന്നിരുന്നാലും ഒഴിവാക്കാൻ പറ്റാത്ത ഒരു നല്ല സുഹൃത്തെന്നനിലയിൽ  ചെറിയാനോട് ചില കാര്യങ്ങൾ പങ്കുവയ്ക്കാമെന്നു തോന്നി.

“ഇയാൾ പതിവായി YouTube കാണാറുണ്ടല്ലോ. അതിൽ ഏതൊക്കെയാണ് ഇയാളുടെ ഇഷ്ട്ടപ്പെട്ട പരിപാടികൾ?” എന്റെ ചോദ്യം അയാൾ ഒട്ടും പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചതല്ല എന്ന് മനസ്സിലായി. 

ചെറിയാൻ നിന്ന്  പരുങ്ങുന്നതുപോലെ തോന്നി.  

“എന്നാൽ ചോദിക്കട്ടെ? YouTube-ൽ ഇപ്പോൾ പട്ടിയെ കളിപ്പിക്കുന്നതും  കോഴിയെ കുളിപ്പിക്കുന്നതും ആനയെ ഓടിക്കുന്നതും അങ്ങനെ പറയാവുന്നതും പറയാൻ കൊള്ളരുതാത്തതുമായ ധാരാളം വിഡിയോകൾ വരാറുണ്ട്. അതിന്റെ പിന്നിലുള്ള ഉദ്ദേശം എന്താണെന്നാണ് താങ്കളുടെ അഭിപ്രായം?”

“പണം. അല്ലാതെന്ത്? അത് മാത്രമല്ലല്ലോ. ഇപ്പോൾ എത്രയോ ചാനലുകളാണ് മതപരമായ കാര്യങ്ങൾ വിശ്വാസികളിൽ എത്തിക്കുന്നത്? അങ്ങനെയൊരെണ്ണം തുടങ്ങാൻ എനിക്ക് പലപ്പോഴും തോന്നിയതാണ്.”

“അതിനു ചെറിയാൻ വൈദികൻ അല്ലല്ലോ?”

“വൈദികർക്കേ മതം പ്രസംഗിക്കാൻ സാധിക്കുകയുള്ളു?”

“ചെറിയാനെ, ഞാൻ പറയാൻ വന്ന കാര്യം മതപരമായ ഒന്നല്ല. ഇപ്പോൾ നാം പറഞ്ഞു വന്നതുപോലുള്ള ഒരു കോൺവെർസേഷൻ എന്ത് കൊണ്ട് YouTube-ൽ തുടങ്ങിക്കൂടാ?അതായതു സമകാലീനമായ വിഷയങ്ങൾ നമ്മൾ അൽപ്പം നർമരസവും പൊടിപ്പും തൊങ്ങലും ചേർത്ത് അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. പട്ടിയെ കുളിപ്പിച്ച്, ഉടുപ്പിട്ട്, തലയിൽ റിബ്ബണും കെട്ടി നടത്തിക്കുന്നത് മില്യൺ കണക്കിന് ആൾക്കാർ കാണുന്നില്ലേ?”

“ആശാനേ? വേറെ വല്ല പണിയും നോക്ക്. പിന്നെ, ഈ ഷോയുടെ പേരെന്താണ്?”

“അതും ഇതും അല്പം മറ്റേതും!”
